The Self and Identity Preconference provides a forum for
discussion and investigation of the complexity of the individual and the collective self. In addition to several speakers, the preconference included presentations by scholarly award winners, a poster session, an
early-career data blitz, and mentoring/networking opportunities.
The 2025 preconference introduced a special focus on “Marginalized
Identity Discourse,” highlighting the functions of discussing group identities with others and the facilitators of these discussions. The fundamental need to belong powerfully influences our social
interactions leading some to avoid discussions of their marginalized identities and experiences with others, oftentimes at a psychological cost to identity development and felt belonging. Exploring
the impact of context in shaping identity-based discussions helps us to better understand the social nature of identity, with positive implications for inclusion efforts in varied organizational
settings.
